HRV Basics: What Heart Rate Variability Actually Means

Short answer: HRV (heart rate variability) measures the tiny variation in time between consecutive heartbeats — not how fast your heart beats, but how much the gap between beats fluctuates. More variability generally reflects a nervous system that can flexibly shift between "rest and digest" and "fight or flight" states, which is why higher HRV is usually read as a positive recovery signal.

Why HRV isn't the same thing as heart rate

Two people can have the same resting heart rate of 60 beats per minute with very different HRV — one person's beats might land almost exactly a second apart every time, while another's naturally speeds up and slows down slightly with each breath. That second pattern, more variability, is generally the healthier one — it reflects strong communication between your heart and your autonomic nervous system.

SDNN vs RMSSD — the two common ways it's measured

HRV isn't one single calculation. Apple Health uses SDNN (the standard deviation of time between beats). Some wearables, including Whoop, calculate HRV using RMSSD instead (the root mean square of successive differences between beats) — a related but mathematically different method. The two aren't directly comparable number-for-number, which is why mixing HRV readings from different sources without accounting for methodology can be misleading.

What moves HRV day to day

  • Sleep quality and duration the night before — one of the strongest short-term influences.
  • Alcohol intake, which reliably suppresses HRV, often for more than one night.
  • Training load and recovery status — a hard training block without adequate recovery tends to lower it.
  • Illness and stress, both of which shift your nervous system toward a lower-variability state.
  • Hydration and even the specific time of day/body position it's measured.

Why trend matters more than any single number

HRV has wide natural variation between individuals — there's no universal "good" number, since it's influenced by age, fitness level, genetics, and measurement method. What's actually useful is your own trend relative to your own baseline: is it staying steady, trending up, or trending down over the past couple of weeks compared to before.
